Day of the Dead Challenge Entries

Sunday, December 18, 2011

I won't be linking away from our blog or posting another blog until January 10th, 2012 to allow all of these entries to get the most comments (which are VOTES) as they can, so please leave a comment below for your FAVORITE design.

We've had a great year. I hope 2012 is better...of course I always hope for progress but it would be really nice to move forward in leaps and bounds instead of the snails pace I've endured in the past 7 years. I often imagine myself in one of those time lapsed filmography's - I am standing still and everyone else rushes past me? Do you feel that way as well?

We sold 10 challenge kits and have 8 wonderful entries. The Challenge was to use 75% of the kit contents (pic below) in their designs. They must use 75% to get scored in five categories: Theme, Creativity, Functionality, Creative use of techniques and BONUS of 5 extra points for using ALL or MOST of the Lucite sent to them.

Here they are - our Day of the Dead entries, one by one.

# 1 Stephanie Haussler - Garden of Skulls

#2 Shelley Nybakke - Pleines - Hangmans' Noose
#3 Jennifer VanBenSchoten - Garden of the Dead

#4 Katie Nelson - Muerta Hermosa

#5 Beth Dewey - Remembrance

#6 Diana Palmer -  Never forget Katrina

#7 Wendy Baker - Twenty flowers for Catrina

#8 Susan Jaisle - Sugar Shack
Good Luck to all our beautiful entries! Leave a comment with your favorite design - we'll be tallying all the Facebook votes for these designs with the comments left here.

Trade Show Series - Guest - Indomitable Sara Aho Lukkonen

Friday, September 16, 2011

Recently, I’ve been seeing articles, interviews and features on Sara’s work in almost every issue of every bead magazine published. It’d be easy to assume that her secret is out – but as a designer – I’ve loved Sara’s work for ages, I’m sure you have too. If you’ve ever thought you could read a person from what they create – it certainly holds true with Sara.
Her creations are quirky (Sara’s quirky) – colorful (Sara is more so) – ever changing (Sara’s a variable cornucopia of fun, swift wit and drive) – her creations scream “talent” and once you use any of her tiny, enameled treasures – you’re hooked! Just like when you meet Sara – hooked, line and sinker! She’s last in our Trade Show Series but she’s certainly not least! Meet the Indomitable force -Sara Aho Lukkonen . . .

1. What brand do you fall under (if any): Independent Jewelry Artist, Business Owner; Artisan and/or other:

I fall under Artisan, business owner & manufacturer.  I don’t think of myself as an artist -  I think of my self as a chemist, but that would not be a category for jewelry business.

2. What type of Trade Shows do you attend as a vendor (not buyer) and how many shows do you attend:

I like the bead society shows the best.  But I do ~8 national shows a year and a handful of the society shows.  I also teach in stores and have trunks shows at the same time and then there are the absentee trunk shows.  So, with all of those types of shows probably ~40 shows a year.

3. How far in advance do you plan for each show (i.e. inventory, advertising, hotels):

Inventory is ongoing.  It can be quite the challenge having enough inventories for the Absentee trunk shows and enough for the trade show.  I don’t advertise for shows I will list them on my website, but I don’t always keep up with that. I pretty much stay in the same hotel chain for shows.  I just tell my husband the dates and he makes the reservations.  One less thing for me to do!

4. What type of advertising do you use, if any:

In 2010 I decided to blast the magazines with advertising.  I advertised in most of the trade magazines out there.  I don’t think that it made a huge difference in sales.  But I did not track it either.  The best advertising for me is to be published by the editors and other designers and get in the product listing.  Also being at the shows is probably the best advertising because they can touch & see the product.

5. Do you have any tips to prevent loss/theft at shows:

I know that at every show something will get stolen.  I have quite a bit of small components. I am usually the only one at the booth so I do the best I can.  If people need to play that game it will catch up to them someday.

6. Do you have a timeline for when and how to apply for tax permits or certifications for other states? And a good way to keep up with multiple permits and tax payment deadlines:

It is part of doing business.  I just have to make sure that I file accordingly with each state.  I like the states that have the license at the show and you either pay for it there or send it in within 30 days of the show.  Most of the taxes are due on the 20th of the month so set the calendar alarm!

7. What suggestions do you have for display ideas that meet both convention center guidelines and fire marshal specifications:

Everyone has a different idea on presentation of products.  I found what works best for me and continue to set up pretty much the same way.  Paying attention to the fire marshal rules is important because you could have to tear down your whole booth and start over!

Like what you see of Sara's answers to our Trade Show Questions - tune in September 20th for the remainder of her answers and the LAST part of our series on Trade Shows and the artists - vendors who attend them. . .

Trade Show Series (cont.) Guest - The Sparkling Pat Riesenburger

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

I've never "met" Pat. We've chatted, e-mailed and Facebook'd for years. I feel like I know her but I've never actually met her. And if you put a gun to my head, I'd be hard pressed to find a ONE single word that describes her - she's a mother, an innovator, an entrepreneur, a wife, a newly crowned Swarovski Ambassador, a crafter, a thrifter, a comic, an animal devotee, a gardener, foodie, home decorator (running out of breath) and a friend...one of those real friends - you know you can count on - that you know is listening, no - hearing you when you talk and one of the few who accepts you for who you are...not who they need you to be. . .
And even though I've not met Pat, she's actually created two of the most memorable moments of my life. I'm so very proud to include her in my very intimate circle of people I "tag" as friends and I thank her for the valuable lessons I've learned in the short time I've known her. And here she is - Pat Riesenburger:
Yep, It's really Pat Ain't she cute??

1. What brand do you fall under (if any):

Artist, Teacher, Business Owner

2. What type of Trade Shows do you attend as a vendor (not buyer) and how many shows do you attend:
My show experience has been somewhat limited as I have not been inclined to spend time away from my kids.  I have been a vendor at To Bead True Blue (Tucson) and TNNA . I am hoping to expand my horizons in 2012.  My nest is will soon be empty as my youngest is heading off to college.  I imagine that I will be more free to travel at that point!

3. How far in advance do you plan for each show (i.e. inventory, advertising, hotels):

About 8 months before a show I start to “noodle it around” by loosely contemplating product, display ideas etc.  Things start to get a bit more serious at the six month point, which is when I must commit to product if it is to be available for the show.

4.What type of advertising do you use, if any:
I rely on the promoters for most of the advertising and have been pleased with their efforts.  I also promote the event on my blog and on my website, as well as through e-newsletters.

5. Do you have any tips to prevent loss/theft at shows:
I am probably too cavalier with respect to loss prevention.  I tend to adopt a “your karma is on YOU” attitude and assume that folks will behave responsibly.  I am not one of those who ties down display samples.  There is always some degree of …ahem…attrition….but I chalk it up to a cost of doing business.

Pat's Thrift finds

6.Do you have a timeline for when and how to apply for tax permits or certifications for other states? And a good way to keep up with multiple permits and tax payment deadlines:
Ummm….Errrr…[I am blushing here…..]….basically I show up at the venue and wait for all of the tax people to track me down.  They always do!

7.What suggestions do you have for display ideas that meet both convention center guidelines and fire Marshall specifications:

It is always a challenge to STAND OUT in a sea of color and glitz.  I am the queen of “decorating on a dime” and one of my favorite tricks is to hunt for large framed pictures at thrift stores, never spending more than a dollar or two. I throw away the paintings and keep the frames, which I spray paint black.  I then staple black chicken wire to the back of the frame and VOILA!  I have the perfect display for my hand dyed fibers!  I simply weave the wool in and out of the chicken wire and hang the “artwork” in my booth.  It is cheap, easy, and attracts a whole lot of attention.

Hump Day. . .

Wednesday, September 2, 2009

twas Wednesday, almost Thursday now. again. . . I am tired and achy. Trying to keep my head up as I type. So I must say, I'll keep it short again. After the novels I have composed, you must be relieved. haha The above picture suggests how I feel...death on my lips.
News:
We shipped off Phalange Plot to Step By Step Beads last week. We got an e-mail stating they received it.

We shipped off another project to Bead & Button a couple of weeks ago, no word as to what has become of it.
We shipped off another project to BeadWork three weeks ago, haven't heard from them either.
Bead Unique has requested Material Girl. However, another magazine requested the same project. Now we don't know what to do. I just know I better feel better soon or we won't get anything sent anywhere. We have many other projects in the works but nothing I have yet to report.
Would you like your projects posted here on our blog? Send us a picture with your name and if you have a website, we'll try and post it.
Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here. Post. Comment.

She looks like my muse. . .

Monday, August 31, 2009

It's almost 1 a.m. in the morning, Tuesday. I am working at home tomorrow for many reasons...I'm tired and I can't sleep? Do you ever have that happen? My eyes are heavy but when they slowly close, they pop open just as fast?
Only a few people know (not anymore, haha) but many of my designs come from what I call "my muse." Okay. I am crazy. Go ahead and say it. My muse has no name (I call her Lucy) but I can see her clearly in my mind. The strange thing about my muse is she only comes to me while I sleep.
She came to me in a dream and handed me Lucies' Daisy Patch. She had it in her hand and gave it to me. She said "Make it and they will love it." And she told me how to make it. When I woke up, I knew how to make Lucies' Daisy Patch and I had never made it before. My muse gave me several other designs but they were not as clear as Daisy Patch and our newest Metal and Lucite Poseur rings.
The girl in the picture above, looks almost exactly like my muse. Everything about her is the same except the color of her hair, which is lighter blond than the small child above. When she appears in my dreams she has a yellow and white gingham dress on and a laurel wreath of white baby's breath flowers with yellow and white daisy's lacing in and out of the wreath. She has white Mary Jane's on with white socks that have tiny yellow and white daisy's on around the hem.
As I type about my muse, I wonder if putting her story on paper will cause her to go away. I have only told a very select people about her in fear that she might not like me talking about her! I guess it's like a baseball player wearing the same pair of socks while on a winning streak.
But my muse has been on my mind lately. I often wonder why she appeared in the first place and why she doesn't appear more and why she is so elusive.
I've never been able to summon her and she appears and both opportune times and inopportune times. There is absolutely no rhyme nor reason why/when she appears but I always know where. In my dreams.
For now, I guess I will have to be happy with whatever she gives me. And not look a "gift muse" in the mouth.
Do you have a muse? What is it? Write and let us know....

It is Friday!

Friday, August 28, 2009

Yes, Friday. Means the weekend for most. For me it means three uninterrupted work days. I get to concentrate on design ideas.

Work on the web. Write instructions for designs. Work on my book outline and insert more data into the actual pages of the book. So far, just inputting info into the book I have over 75 pages. There is no real information in the book yet! So I am on my way to having enough information for a book. Now I just have to find someone who wants to publish it.

We just shipped the Phalange Plot rings off to a magazine for publication, no date as of yet. (picture above).

Today was a slow day in the store but the web was very busy. We got our first order from Finland. I want to get a HUGE world map and put those little stick pins on all the states, cities, countries, continents and ummm...parishes (Yep..goooo Louisiana) we've sent orders!

My grandmother is coming from California in about 6 weeks and it would be cool to have a map like that for her. She would be so proud. My older sister Cheryl is coming from North Carolina too! She's never seen our store. So we're going to have a GOOD OLE TIME.

Back to the weekend.

So this weekend I am working on a necklace support for a bezeled Rivoli idea I've had for about 5 months now. Tarlee in her infinite wisdom has figured out how to make my idea come true. :o) Ya buddy.

Also, working on two other versions of the "Material Girl" cuff to be sent to a magazine, we're waiting on a due date.

And then. . . I am going to try to start work on my two necklace ideas. Tarlee has a pearl cuff she's been working on and we just need instructions for it.

Soon....we're going to start working on inventory for To Bead True Blue in Tucson, Arizona. http://www.tobeadtrueblue.com/

As soon as we get back we have to replenish stock for:

Bead Blast, Kansas City http://www.kcbeadsociety.org/bead-blast-2010
Bead & Button Wisconsin http://www.beadandbuttonshow.com/bnbshow/default.aspx

In the middle of all the aforementioned excitement, we have to have our own family events, birthdays, holidays, etc. Our plate is certainly full.

What is on your agenda? What are your plans? Do you make a goals list each year? Do you make a daily planner list? If you're planning to enter Fall Craft fairs or trade shows to sell your jewelry or wares, let us know.

Tell us everything! We want to know what you have planned. Send us your pics. Ideas, thoughts.

Thanks for reading. Thanks for being here. Post. Comment.
